Amanda Wins U.S. Open Sobhy Sister Showdown

Amanda Sobhy

The 2025 Comcast Business U.S. Open second round concluded with a sibling showdown between Team USA’s Amanda and Sabrina Sobhy, as the elder world No. 9 Amanda came back from a game down to reach her seventh career quarterfinal Tuesday, October 21, at the Arlen Specter US Squash Center in Philadelphia.

Tuesday marked just the third career match up between the sisters on the PSA World Tour and ninth in all competitions with Amanda leading the head-to-head 8-1. It was Sabrina who took an early advantage, pushing her sister to take the first game 11-7. Amanda stole the momentum in the second game and went on to win 11-2, 11-8, 11-6 in forty-three minutes.

“I’m really happy, I think it was a great match, honestly,” Amanda said. “There weren’t that many contentious calls. It was fair play. Good squash on both ends. And it’s nice, you know, like the last two years we were both out and it’s nice to see her back. It’s nice that we get to battle it out on court again.”

Two years ago, Amanda sustained the second Achilles rupture of her career, ending her season prematurely, while Sabrina spent majority of last season on the sidelines due to injury.

“I think we were respectful in the sense that we talked to each other like sisters, but then gave each other space to prepare for a match and kept our distance,” Amanda said. “We’ll go back to being sisters, and we’ll probably go get lunch tomorrow and hang out!”

Amanda will bid to reach her third career U.S. Open semifinal Thursday night against eight-time world champion and top seed Nour El Sherbini, who dispatched U.S. teammate Marina Stefanoni in the second round.

The men’s draw will field two first-time quarterfinalists in the form of France’s world No. 18 Baptiste Masotti and Egypt’s world No. 15 Mohamed Zakaria who both upset top eight seeds.

Zakaria, the eighteen-year-old and two-time World Junior Champion, defeated world No. 10 Youssef Soliman for the first time in his career and maintain his perfect record in his maiden U.S. Open. Masotti stopped 2024 semifinalist and Penn graduate Aly Abou Eleinen in his tracks in straight games and will face 2023 champion Paul Coll in the quarterfinals Thursday.
