SquashSmarts Junior Challenge Hosted at U.S. Open

Wednesday afternoon, the Delaware Investments U.S. Open hosted seventy SquashSmarts students at Drexel University’s Daskalakis Athletic Center. They played a team tournament, with each student rotating through multiple one-point matches, on the ASB GlassCourt.

Before and after the tournament, they were treated to question-and-answer sessions with four Team USA members Olivia Blatchford, Chris Gordon, Todd Harrity and Amanda Sobhy. The conversations were robust, humorous and compelling.

Then the squad split into two. The boys went off on a special behind-the-scenes tour of the U.S. Open. Graham Bassett, the Victor Elmaleh Director of Doubles and Professional Squash at US Squash and the COO of the U.S. Open, led the tour.

The girls held a practice at the Kline & Specter Squash Center. A half dozen PSA pros from around the world, as well as SquashSmarts’ female staff and volunteers, led the practice: Kelsey Engman (U.S.), Tesni Evans (Wales), Nouran Gohar (Egypt), Joelle King (New Zealand), Christine Nunn (Australia) and Sarah-Jane Perry (England).

The squad reunited for the Women in Sports Day reception and then came back upstairs to watch the quarterfinal matches.
